Denmark has one major piece of gambling legislation that governs what its citizens can and cannot do. Known as the Gambling Act, this was passed in 2010 but has only been in effect since 2012. The Gambling Act has also been amended a couple of times to better explain the rules regarding gambling laws and what operators must do to cater to Danish bettors.

Provided that a casino or gambling venue has obtained a license from the Danish gambling authorities, they are permitted to offer their services to Danish players. These ISP blocks only apply to casinos that accept Danish players when they aren’t supposed to, not to those that don’t accept Danes.

The Danish gambling sector is governed by the Danish Gambling Authority, known as Spillemyndigheden. It enforces and oversees any regulation necessary for businesses that have obtained a Danish gambling license. It is worth noting that this authority also extends to the Faroe Islands and Greenland.

Lotteries, bingo, and keno are not a part of the same scope as casino gambling and sports betting. They do not fall under the jurisdiction of Spillemyndigheden but are instead the plaything of the state-run monopoly, Danske Spil. Horse racing also falls under Danske Spil’s jurisdiction.

Thus far, over fifty betting sites have obtained gambling licenses from Spillemyndigheden. It is worth noting that sites aren’t required to be based in Denmark or be Danish at all. However, they do have to agree to strict regulation by the Danish Gambling Authority.

Virtually all major forms of gambling are legal in Denmark. You can bet on sports, live dealer casino games, slots, and table games. Number-based betting games like lotteries, keno and bingo are also popular. There doesn’t appear to be one type of gambling option that is more popular than the others. At a push, we’d say that slot machines tend to be more popular, but that is simply based on the fact that most games found at Danish licensed casinos tend to be slots.
